Deduction context
| Annual interest cap: | $10,000 per return, shared across vehicles |
|---|---|
| MAGI threshold — MFJ: | $200,000 (joint returns only) |
| MAGI threshold — Single / HoH / QSS / MFS: | $100,000; MFS is eligible |
| Phase-out reduction: | $200 per $1,000 or portion thereof above the threshold (round up) |
| Availability: | Itemizers and non-itemizers; tax years 2025–2028 |
| Lender statement: | §6050AA; generally interest of $600 or more; due January 31 following the year |
At maximum capped interest, the deduction reaches zero once MAGI exceeds $149,000 ($249,000 joint) — the public $150,000/$250,000 figures are the exact-consumption approximation. The first cent over those amounts already exhausts the cap; the first whole-dollar zero points are $149,001/$249,001. Smaller interest amounts run out earlier.
A new car, minivan, van, SUV, pickup or motorcycle must have original use beginning with you, be manufactured for public streets with at least two wheels, be a Clean Air Act title II motor vehicle, have GVWR under 14,000 lb and have final assembly in the United States. Excluded: leases, fleet sales, salvage-title vehicles, scrap or parts purchases, and commercial vehicles not used personally.
Include the VIN on the return. Refinancing can qualify only to the outstanding eligible principal with the same first lien; extra cash-out principal is excluded. Related-party loans (§§267(b)/707(b)(1)) do not qualify. Refinance allocation and related-party status are not modeled — this estimate assumes statement-reported interest on a qualified loan.
Non-itemizers are eligible under §63(b)(7). This deduction is subtracted from AGI in computing taxable income; it does not reduce AGI. No deduction for taxable years beginning after December 31, 2028. Context only — IRC §163(h)(4) and §1.163-16(h)(2), final regulations (Federal Register, September 8, 2026).

Documentation checklist
- Lender §6050AA statement showing interest, principal, loan origination date and vehicle year, make, model and VIN; generally due January 31 after the year when interest is $600 or more.
- Purchase and first-lien loan documents confirming a post-2024 purchase loan and new original use; no lease financing or related-party loan.
- Dealer label or VIN documentation confirming final assembly in the United States, eligible vehicle type and GVWR under 14,000 lb.
- Retain support for personal use, any qualified refinance allocation, and the VIN included on your return. Combine qualified interest across vehicles before applying the per-return cap.

FAQ
Does “No Tax on Car Loan Interest” make my vehicle payments tax-free?
This is a federal income tax deduction for qualified interest, not a credit or a deduction for the principal or purchase price. The $10,000 cap applies per return across all vehicles. This tool estimates the deduction, not tax savings or state tax treatment.
How does the $1,000 phase-out step work?
After capping interest at $10,000, subtract $200 for every $1,000 or portion thereof of MAGI above $100,000, or $200,000 for a joint return. Round the number of increments up. Even a one-cent excess starts a $200 reduction. At maximum capped interest, MAGI of $149,000 leaves $200, but $149,000.01 leaves zero; the joint equivalents are $249,000 and $249,000.01. Smaller interest amounts can run out earlier.
Are married filing separately and qualifying surviving spouse eligible?
Yes, if the loan, vehicle and VIN requirements are met. Only married filing jointly receives the $200,000 MAGI threshold. Single, head of household, qualifying surviving spouse and married filing separately use $100,000. There is no SSN gate in this estimator.
Which vehicles and loans qualify?
The original use must begin with you: used vehicles do not qualify. The vehicle must be manufactured for public streets, have at least two wheels, be a Clean Air Act title II motor vehicle, have a gross vehicle weight rating under 14,000 pounds, and have final assembly in the United States. Eligible types are cars, minivans, vans, SUVs, pickup trucks and motorcycles. The post-2024 purchase loan must be secured by a first lien; leases, fleet sales, salvage-title vehicles and purchases for scrap or parts are excluded.
What about mixed personal use, refinancing or related-party loans?
Under the final regulations, you must expect personal use more than 50% of the time when you purchase the vehicle; commercial vehicles not used personally do not qualify. Refinanced interest can qualify to the extent of the outstanding eligible principal, with the same first-lien security; extra cash-out principal is not eligible. Loans from related parties under §§267(b) or 707(b)(1) do not qualify. This tool does not split refinance principal or evaluate related parties: enter only statement-reported interest you have determined is qualified.
Can I claim the deduction without itemizing?
Yes. IRC §63(b)(7) allows it for non-itemizers. It is subtracted from AGI in computing taxable income, rather than reducing AGI itself. Include the vehicle VIN on your return and retain the lender statement. No deduction is allowed for taxable years beginning after December 31, 2028.
Methodology
Authority and period. IRC §163(h)(4), added by Pub. L. 119-21 §70203, applies to tax years 2025–2028. T.D. 10054, 91 FR 57214 (September 8, 2026), document 2026-18219, supplies the final regulations at §1.163-16 (effective November 9, 2026; applicable to tax years 2025–2028). The $10,000 cap is per taxable year and per return, shared across vehicles. §63(b)(7) permits non-itemizers to subtract this deduction from AGI in computing taxable income; AGI itself is unchanged.
Cap, then ceiling increments. Under §163(h)(4)(C) and §1.163-16(h)(2), tentative deduction = min(qualified interest, $10,000). MAGI is AGI plus excluded foreign income under §§911, 931 and 933. The threshold is $200,000 for a joint return only; Single, HoH, QSS and MFS use $100,000. Compute the nonnegative excess in integer cents. Reduction = min($10,000, $200 × ceil(excess / $1,000)); deduction = max(0, tentative deduction − reduction). The regulation says “reduced (but not below zero) by $200 for each $1,000 (or portion thereof).” This is a ceiling, including a fractional dollar, not a completed-increment or linear phase-out. At maximum capped interest, the deduction reaches zero once MAGI exceeds $149,000 ($249,000 joint) — the public $150,000/$250,000 figures are the exact-consumption approximation. The first whole-dollar zero points are $149,001/$249,001; smaller interest can be exhausted earlier.
Eligibility gates. In order, the estimator checks a qualified loan, an eligible vehicle and VIN inclusion. Under §163(h)(4)(B), the loan must be incurred after December 31, 2024 for the purchase of an applicable passenger vehicle for personal use, secured by a first lien; lease financing is excluded. §1.163-16(f) requires expected personal use more than 50% of the time at purchase. Vehicle requirements under §163(h)(4)(D) include new original use, manufacture for public streets, at least two wheels, a Clean Air Act title II motor vehicle, GVWR under 14,000 pounds and final assembly in the United States. Cars, minivans, vans, SUVs, pickup trucks and motorcycles can qualify. Fleet sales, commercial vehicles not used personally, salvage-title vehicles and scrap or parts purchases are excluded. The vehicle VIN must be included on the return. MFS remains eligible and there is no SSN gate.
Reporting and scope. Under §6050AA, lenders generally report interest of $600 or more and furnish a statement by January 31 of the following year, including the interest, principal, origination date and vehicle year, make, model and VIN. Refinance principal allocation and related-party exclusions under §163(h)(4)(E) are not modeled. Refinanced debt must retain the same first-lien security; interest allocable to principal above the outstanding eligible balance is excluded. Loans from related parties under §§267(b)/707(b)(1) do not qualify. The estimate assumes the entered statement interest is qualified; it does not amortize a loan or determine tax savings, income tax liability, or state treatment.
Protected inputs and rounding. Full-string parsing accepts complete thousands-comma groups. Invalid or empty drafts remain visible with an error while retaining the last valid full amount. Input cents round half-up; negatives become zero and money is capped at $10,000,000. Subsequent operations use integer cents. Reset restores C01 and clears invalid drafts. Copy link includes the six current valid inputs. The filing-status comparison holds all other inputs fixed.
