Your 2026 inputs

1. Income and interest

The MAGI threshold is $200,000 for MFJ and $100,000 for Single, MFS and Head of household. The $10,000 cap is per return.

$

AGI plus amounts excluded under §§911, 931 and 933. Do not subtract this car-loan deduction from AGI or MAGI. Complete comma groups accepted (1,234,567.89). Empty, invalid or malformed text such as 1,23 stays visible with an error and retains the last valid full amount. Apply on blur or Enter. Negatives become $0; maximum $10,000,000; half-up cents ($0.005 → $0.01).

The lender statement is authoritative. Direct entry can combine qualified loans; amortization estimates one loan. Switching methods retains each method's inputs.

$

Enter the combined qualified interest from lender statements, not principal or the full car payments. For two vehicles with $4,000 and $8,000 of interest, enter $12,000. Exclude ineligible loans and amounts claimed elsewhere.

This count never multiplies the cap. The law has no loan-count limit; 10,000 is only this input's display limit. 1–10000, whole numbers. Invalid/empty text retains the last valid value; apply on blur or Enter.

2. Loan and vehicle qualifications

For multiple vehicles, every included loan must meet these conditions. Use the earliest origination, lowest expected personal-use percentage and highest GVWR; the selected type must describe an allowed category for every vehicle. Exclude failed loans before combining their interest. A failed confirmation makes this entered group ineligible; the tool does not allocate a mixed eligible/ineligible total.

Must be after December 31, 2024 to qualify. For a combined direct entry, use the earliest included loan date. For this monthly estimate, payment 1 is assigned to the origination month; the day does not change the schedule. Dates through December 31, 2026; empty/invalid dates keep the last valid date.

Personal use by you, your spouse or qualifying relatives must exceed 50% of the expected time of ownership. 85% personal / 15% rideshare qualifies. Do not also deduct the same interest as business interest; business-use apportionment is outside this tool. 0–100, up to two decimals (half-up). Invalid/empty text retains the last valid value; apply on blur or Enter.

The vehicle must also be manufactured primarily for public roads, have at least two wheels, and be a motor vehicle under Clean Air Act title II.

Use manufacturer GVWR, not curb weight. It must be strictly below 14,000 lb. For a combined total, use the highest GVWR among included vehicles. 1–100000, whole numbers. Invalid/empty text retains the last valid value; apply on blur or Enter.

Confirm a new-vehicle purchase meeting the original-use rule. A used vehicle does not qualify. See Methodology for the limited dealer-use/returned-vehicle rules.

A general personal loan or junior lien does not qualify. Final regulations describe the first voluntary security interest and limited temporary-recording/later-involuntary-lien rules.

Check the dealer window label or the plant of manufacture from the NHTSA VIN decoder. Brand headquarters and seller location are not the test.

Yes disqualifies it. Lease payments are never qualified passenger vehicle loan interest.

These transactions are expressly excluded by §163(h)(4)(B)(ii). Exclude them from a combined interest total.

Eight qualification results

  • PASS · Loan originated after Dec 31, 2024

Entered origination date: 2025-01-01. Loans originated on or before December 31, 2024 do not qualify.

  • PASS · Original use starts with the taxpayer (new vehicle)

Original use with the taxpayer is confirmed.

  • PASS · Personal use more than 50 percent of the time (regs 1.163-16(f)(1); 85/15 mixed use still qualifies)

Expected personal use at purchase: 100.00%. The test is strictly more than 50%; some business use does not automatically disqualify the loan.

  • PASS · Loan secured by a FIRST lien on the vehicle (163(h)(4)(B)(i))

    First-lien security is confirmed.

  • PASS · Not a related-party loan (163(h)(4)(E)(iii))

The lender is confirmed not to be a related party under §§267(b)/707(b)(1).

  • PASS · Final assembly in the United States (dealer label / NHTSA VIN decoder)

U.S. final assembly is confirmed; retain the dealer label or VIN-decoder evidence.

  • PASS · Vehicle is car/minivan/van/SUV/pickup/motorcycle

Entered vehicle type: car. Only the six listed categories qualify; the vehicle must also meet the statutory road-use and Clean Air Act requirements.

  • PASS · GVWR under 14,000 pounds

Entered manufacturer GVWR: 4,500 lb. Exactly 14,000 lb does not qualify.

Lease exclusion: PASS — lease financing is not included.

Other excluded transactions: PASS — fleet-sale, salvage-title and scrap/parts financing are not included.

Why this amount?

  • Interest source: Direct lender-statement entry: $4,000.00 across 1 vehicle(s). Confirm that only qualifying interest, not principal or duplicate business deductions, is included.
  • Shared cap: $4,000.00 is limited to $10,000.00 per return, giving $4,000.00 before the income phaseout. The cap is shared, not multiplied by the vehicle count.
  • MAGI staircase: 0 × $200.00 = $0.00 statutory reduction. Each $1,000 or portion of MAGI above $100,000.00 counts as a complete step; the final deduction cannot fall below $0. With this tentative amount, the deduction is exhausted when MAGI is strictly above $119,000.00. It can reach zero before the stated upper endpoint.
  • AGI and itemizing: The deduction is subtracted from AGI in computing taxable income under §63(b)(7). It does not reduce AGI or the MAGI used here, and is available with or without itemizing.
  • Tax-saving illustration: $4,000.00 × 22% = $880.00. The rate is the 2026 ordinary marginal rate at MAGI, not actual taxable income; deductions, capital gains, credits and bracket crossings can change actual savings.
  • VIN and records: Report the VIN for each included vehicle on the tax return. Check U.S. assembly using the NHTSA VIN decoder or dealer label. This calculator does not collect or verify a VIN.
  • Refinancing: Only the portion within the outstanding balance of the original qualifying loan can remain eligible, with first-lien security and the other rules retained. Cash-out amounts are excluded. Enter qualifying lender-statement interest directly; this schedule does not model refinance events.

FAQ

Do I have to itemize, and does this reduce AGI?

You can claim qualified passenger vehicle loan interest with or without itemizing. It is subtracted from adjusted gross income in computing taxable income under §63(b)(7). It does not reduce AGI or the MAGI used for this deduction's phaseout.

Does $1 over the MAGI threshold reduce the deduction by only 20 cents?

No. Section 163(h)(4)(C)(ii)(I) reduces the capped deduction by $200 for each $1,000 or portion thereof above the threshold. With a $10,000 tentative deduction, Single MAGI of $100,001 gives $9,800; MAGI of $149,999 gives $0. Smaller tentative deductions can disappear earlier.

Can a vehicle with some business use qualify?

Yes. Under §1.163-16(f)(1), at purchase the taxpayer must expect personal use for more than 50% of the time. An 85% personal / 15% rideshare mix meets that gate. Business-interest allocation is not performed here, and the same interest cannot be deducted twice.

Can I combine interest from two vehicles?

Yes. The $10,000 cap is shared across qualified loans on the return, not multiplied by the vehicle count. In direct-entry mode, enter the combined qualifying interest and confirm that every included loan meets the requirements. Amortization mode estimates one loan; combine lender-statement amounts in direct-entry mode instead.

Does refinancing or leasing qualify?

Lease financing is excluded. Refinancing can retain qualification only for debt within the outstanding balance of the original qualifying loan, secured by a first lien and subject to the other requirements. Cash-out amounts do not qualify. Use direct-entry interest after determining the qualifying portion; the schedule does not model refinancing.

Why can the amortization estimate differ from my lender statement?

The estimate uses fixed-rate monthly amortization, with the first payment assigned to the origination month and no rounding between payments. It selects only months in calendar 2026. Actual due dates, daily accrual, extra or missed payments, fees and lender accounting can change the amount. The lender statement is authoritative.

Methodology

Statute, years and sources. Pub. L. 119-21 §70203 adds the temporary qualified passenger vehicle loan interest rules in IRC §163(h)(4) for tax years beginning after December 31, 2024 and before January 1, 2029. This calculator is fixed to tax year 2026 and uses published rules, not unpublished future parameters. TD 10054, 91 FR 57214 is the final regulation published September 8, 2026, effective November 9, 2026; its published interpretations are identified below.

Eight qualifications and express exclusions. Section 163(h)(4)(B)(i) requires debt incurred after December 31, 2024, for purchase of a qualifying vehicle for personal use, “secured by a first lien”. Under §163(h)(4)(D), original use must commence with the taxpayer; the vehicle must be manufactured primarily for public roads, have at least two wheels, qualify as a motor vehicle under Clean Air Act title II, be a car, minivan, van, SUV, pickup or motorcycle, have GVWR strictly less than 14,000 lb, and have final assembly in the United States. Used-vehicle purchases fail the original-use gate. Final §1.163-16(e) addresses limited dealer demonstration and returned-vehicle circumstances; confirm the original-use test from your records. Section 163(h)(4)(E)(iii) excludes debt owed to a related person under §§267(b) or 707(b)(1). Each of these eight gates has a separate PASS/FAIL result. Section 163(h)(4)(B)(ii) additionally excludes fleet-sale loans, commercial vehicles not used for personal purposes, lease financing, salvage-title vehicles and scrap/parts purchases; the page separately checks lease and other excluded financing. Any failure makes the entered group ineligible. For multiple vehicles, remove ineligible loans before entering the combined amount; this tool does not split mixed eligible/ineligible interest.

First lien, personal use and duplicate deductions. Final §1.163-16(b)(15) defines first lien by the first voluntary security interest recorded against the vehicle, with rules for temporary recording delays and later involuntary liens. An unsecured or junior-lien personal loan does not satisfy that gate. Final §1.163-16(f)(1) tests expected use when the debt is incurred: personal use by the taxpayer, spouse or qualifying relatives must be “for more than 50 percent of the time” during expected ownership. Exactly 50% fails; 85% personal and 15% rideshare qualifies. Under §1.163-16(g), the same interest must not be deducted both here and as business interest. This calculator does not optimize business-use apportionment: enter only the interest being treated as qualified passenger vehicle loan interest after resolving any other deduction claims.

Shared cap and the MAGI staircase. Section 163(h)(4)(C)(i) caps interest taken into account at $10,000 per return per tax year; multiple qualifying loans share that cap. Tentative deduction = min(qualifying 2026 interest, $10,000). Section 163(h)(4)(C)(ii)(I) says the capped amount “shall be reduced (but not below zero) by $200 for each $1,000 (or portion thereof)” by which MAGI exceeds $100,000 ($200,000 on a joint return). Steps = ceiling(max(0, MAGI − threshold) ÷ $1,000); formula reduction = $200 × steps; final deduction = max(0, tentative − reduction). Single, MFS and HoH use $100,000; MFJ uses $200,000. The formula reduction is displayed even when it exceeds the tentative amount; the final deduction floors at zero. At the full $10,000 cap, zero begins strictly above $149,000 / $249,000 (first whole-dollar inputs $149,001 / $249,001; first cent inputs $149,000.01 / $249,000.01). Thus $150,000 / $250,000 are upper endpoints where the deduction is already zero, not the first zero inputs. Smaller tentative amounts can reach zero earlier; the report shows the cutoff for the entered amount. Section 163(h)(4)(C)(ii)(II) defines MAGI as AGI increased by income excluded under §§911, 931 or 933.

Taxable income, not AGI; tax-saving illustration. IRC §63(b)(7) makes this deduction available to non-itemizers; it is subtracted from adjusted gross income in computing taxable income. It does not reduce AGI or MAGI and is also available to itemizers. Federal tax saved here = final deduction × the 2026 ordinary marginal rate at entered MAGI, using the unchanged Rev. Proc. 2025-32 §4.01 Tables 1–4 bracket engine. MAGI is a proxy, not actual taxable income. Standard/itemized deductions, bracket crossings, capital gains, credits and other taxes can change the true saving. The result is not a tax credit, refund estimate or full return computation.

Calendar-2026 monthly amortization. Direct entry uses lender-statement interest. The optional schedule models one fixed-rate level-payment loan. Monthly rate i = APR ÷ 100 ÷ 12; payment = principal × i ÷ (1 − (1 + i)−term), or principal ÷ term when APR is zero. Each month, interest = opening balance × i, principal repaid = payment − interest, and the remaining balance floors at zero. The first monthly payment is assigned to the origination month; the day is ignored. Sum only payments assigned to January–December 2026. For a January 2025 origination, these are periods 13–24; for a July 2026 origination, only six monthly payments are included. An original $47,640 loan at 6.6% for 60 months gives a displayed payment of $934.36 and calendar-2026 interest of $2,329.83 with January 2025 origination. This is separate from a direct lender-statement entry of $3,100. No interim monthly rounding is applied; rows/payment display cents. The summed 2026 interest rounds half-up to cents before the deduction; displayed monthly rows can sum a cent differently. Final §1.163-16(c)(2) discusses daily accrual and accounting rules; this monthly estimate does not replace them. Actual payment dates, extra/missed payments, fees and lender statements control your reportable amount.

VIN, assembly and refinancing. Section 163(h)(4)(B)(iii) requires each vehicle's VIN on the tax return. This calculator does not collect, validate or submit a VIN. Use the NHTSA VIN decoder plant information or dealer label to confirm U.S. final assembly under §1.163-16(e)(3). Brand nationality is not sufficient. Section 163(h)(4)(E)(ii) and final §1.163-16(d)(4) allow qualifying refinance interest only to the extent of the outstanding balance of the original qualifying debt, with first-lien security and the remaining rules retained; cash-out debt is excluded and pro-rata allocation may be required. Use direct entry after determining that portion. The monthly schedule does not model refinancing or negative-equity/nonqualifying purchases.

Input contract and scope. Money inputs accept complete plain numbers or properly grouped commas (1,234,567.89), cap at $10,000,000, clamp negatives to $0, and round half-up to cents ($0.005 → $0.01). Invalid, empty and malformed drafts such as 1,23 remain visible with an error and preserve the last valid full value; apply on blur or Enter. Percentages accept 0–100 with half-up two decimals; term is 1–600 whole months, vehicle count is 1–10,000 and GVWR is 1–100,000 whole lb. These are input bounds, not extra tax-law limits. Invalid constrained numbers/dates also preserve their previous values. Reset restores the $80,000 MAGI / $4,000 direct-interest example. Out of scope: business-use apportionment, state tax, Form 2210, state sales tax computation, insurance, lender-statement differences, actual daily-interest/accounting adjustments, corporate/estate/trust returns and tax-return-level savings. The taxpayer must verify all loan, vehicle, use and VIN facts. Illustration only. ESTIMATED · NOT ADVICE / ILLUSTRATION · NOT OFFICIAL.
