FAQ

Who qualifies for the $1,000?

A child born from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2028 qualifies for the seed if the child is a US citizen and has a valid Social Security number.

Can I open an account for a child born before 2025 or after 2028?

Yes. Any US child under age 18 with a valid SSN can open and contribute to a Trump Account. The 2025–2028 birth window applies only to the one-time $1,000 government seed.

How can the money be invested before age 18?

Until the start of the calendar year the beneficiary turns 18, funds may be held only in cash or deposits, or in mutual funds and ETFs tracking a qualified US total-market index. Those investment restrictions lift at the start of that year.

How much can everyone contribute each year?

The combined annual limit is $5,000 from all sources, including parents, relatives, and employers. Employer contributions of up to $2,500 can be tax-free and count toward the same $5,000 limit.

Can money be withdrawn before age 18?

No. No distributions are allowed before the calendar year the beneficiary turns 18, and there is no hardship exception.

What happens at 18?

At the start of the calendar year the beneficiary turns 18, the investment restrictions lift and the account is treated as a Traditional IRA. Standard IRA rules apply, including the 10% early-distribution penalty before age 59½ and the standard IRA exceptions.

Methodology

Seed eligibility follows 2025 ≤ birth year ≤ 2028 AND US citizen AND valid SSN; account eligibility is broader and includes any US child under 18 with an SSN. Growth uses annual compounding: the $1,000 seed is applied in the birth year; contributions begin no earlier than 2026, are added at the start of each year through age 17, and stop in the year the beneficiary turns 18. The balance then compounds without new contributions to ages 30 and 65. Employer money is included in the same all-source limit. Limit is $5,000 through 2027, inflation-indexed thereafter per §530A. Until the start of the calendar year the beneficiary turns 18, investments are limited to cash/deposits or mutual funds/ETFs tracking a qualified US total-market index. No pre-18 distributions or hardship exceptions apply. At that point the restrictions lift and standard Traditional IRA rules apply, including the 10% penalty before age 59½ and standard exceptions.
