Enter AMTI before the exemption, including applicable AMT adjustments and preferences, rather than AGI. Enter dollars and cents; complete comma groups are accepted (1,234.56). Invalid or empty text stays visible with an error and keeps the last valid amount. Negative amounts become $0; maximum $10,000,000; half-up cents.

FAQ

Does this calculator tell me how much AMT I owe?

No. It estimates only the AMT exemption remaining after the 2026 phase-out. It does not compute tentative minimum tax, regular tax, preferential capital gains rates, credits or final AMT. Use the complete Form 6251 instructions for an individual return; estates and trusts use Schedule I (Form 1041).

Should I enter AGI or taxable income?

Enter alternative minimum taxable income (AMTI), after the applicable AMT adjustments and preferences, before the exemption. AGI and ordinary taxable income are not substitutes for AMTI.

How does the 2026 phase-out work?

At or below your filing-status threshold, the full exemption remains. Above the threshold, each additional dollar of AMTI reduces the exemption by 50 cents, until the exemption reaches zero. The phase-out fraction shown is the percentage of the original exemption removed.

Where does the 28% AMT rate begin?

For 2026, the 28% rate breakpoint under IRC §55(b)(1) is $244,500 of excess taxable income, or $122,250 for married filing separately. These are context-only figures: neither the 26% nor the 28% tax calculation enters this exemption-only tool.

Is the published earned-income-plus-$9,750 child cap applied?

Rev. Proc. 2025-32 §4.11 publishes an inflation-adjusted child AMT exemption cap of earned income plus $9,750 under §§55(d) and 59(j). However, current IRC §55(d)(4)(A)(iii) states that “subsection (j) of section 59 shall not apply,” so this published cap is not an operative limit for 2026. No child cap is applied by this tool.

Methodology

Parameters and scope. This 2026 exemption-only illustration uses IRC §55(d) and the exemption amounts, phase-out thresholds and complete phase-out amounts in Rev. Proc. 2025-32 §4.10. Single and Head of household share a band; Married filing jointly and Qualifying surviving spouse share a band. The calculation does not apply a child cap.

50% phase-out. OBBBA §70107(c) added IRC §55(d)(4)(A)(ii)(IV): “by substituting ‘50 percent’ for ‘25 percent’.” The 50% rate applies to taxable years beginning in 2026; before 2026, the rate was 25%. The reduction is 50% × max(0, AMTI − threshold), and the exemption remaining is max(0, original exemption − reduction). Dollar results are rounded to cents. The displayed reduction is limited to the original exemption; the phase-out fraction is the share of that exemption removed.

Context-only rate breakpoints. Rev. Proc. 2025-32 §4.10 gives the 28% rate breakpoint as $244,500 of excess taxable income, or $122,250 for MFS. These figures do not enter the exemption calculation.

Published child amount, not applicable for 2026. Rev.

Inputs and limits. AMTI is entered directly, not estimated from AGI. Complete comma groups are accepted; input cents round half-up, negative inputs become $0, and inputs are capped at $10,000,000. Invalid text retains the last valid amount. This is not a full Form 6251 computation: tentative minimum tax, preferential capital gains rates, regular tax, credits and final AMT are outside scope.
